Where it flies
Air Europa operates the only direct service between Johannesburg and Madrid, providing the most efficient connection between South Africa and Spain or onward Latin American destinations via the Madrid Barajas hub. The route runs a Boeing 787 widebody several times a week. Air Europa's network is structurally strong on Spain-Latin America flows — Buenos Aires, Lima, Bogota, Caracas, Montevideo, Mexico City, Havana — which makes the Johannesburg-Madrid leg an underrated routing for South Africans heading to Latin America without the much more expensive direct-Brazil option.
Practical notes: Air Europa is a SkyTeam member, so miles credit on Flying Blue (Air France-KLM), Delta SkyMiles, and the rest of the alliance. The airline's on-board product is mid-tier compared to the major European flag carriers — economy is competitive but the business cabin is less polished than Lufthansa or KLM. South African passport holders need a Schengen visa for entry to Spain. Madrid Barajas is a relatively easy transfer airport with most onward Latin American flights from the same Terminal 4S. Online check-in opens through the Air Europa website and app from twenty-four hours before departure.
