Cheapest Months to Fly from South Africa

Use this guide to find the best-value travel windows across 508 South African routes. Domestic, regional Africa and international flights all follow different seasonal patterns — plan around school holidays and peak seasons to get the sharpest fares.

Key rules of thumb

Domestic (JNB–CPT, JNB–DUR, JNB–PLZ etc.)

May and February offer the lowest domestic fares across South Africa's major corridors. Peak periods to avoid: December/January (summer holidays), Easter weekend, and June/July school break. Book 3–6 weeks ahead — buying too far in advance often yields no saving on domestic routes.

Africa routes (Harare, Nairobi, Mauritius, Lusaka etc.)

February and May are the shoulder windows with the sharpest fares on regional Africa routes. December and June/July school holidays push prices up significantly, especially on leisure routes to Mauritius and Victoria Falls. Book 6–10 weeks ahead for the best availability.

International long-haul (Europe, Middle East, USA, Asia)

November is the biggest value month for international flights from South Africa — it sits between the October half-term and December school holidays. May is the second-best window. Avoid December and June/July when demand from both hemispheres overlaps. Book 2–4 months ahead; last-minute long-haul fares are rarely cheap.
