Bulawayo is Zimbabwe's second city and a very different entry point from Harare. It is the cultural and historical capital of Matabeleland -- home to the kings of the Ndebele state, the site of the Matabele Wars, and the city that most Matabeleland families think of as their reference point rather than Harare. Airlink and FastJet operate the direct service to Johannesburg, a 1h 20m flight that is one of the shorter international sectors in southern Africa. The passenger profile mixes family visits -- the Bulawayo-Gauteng diaspora is among the most established of any Zimbabwe-South Africa corridor -- with business travellers tied to the city's industrial base and a growing number of Hwange and Matobo-bound safari guests using Bulawayo as their air entry.
South African passport holders require a visa for Zimbabwe, obtainable on arrival at Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo International Airport for USD 50 single-entry, or the KAZA UniVisa for USD 50 if the itinerary includes Livingstone, Zambia or Kasane, Botswana. Cash in USD is the practical currency at the visa counter -- card acceptance at Bulawayo Airport is unreliable. The airport sits 25km north of the city centre; the informal cab scene makes pre-arranging a transfer through the lodge or guesthouse the practical approach. November is the cheapest month; July-August carries the highest fares partly because dry-season game-viewing at Hwange -- when elephants concentrate around shrinking waterholes in August and September -- drives safari demand across the region's routes simultaneously, filling capacity that would otherwise sit softer. The route also carries a small but consistent flow of NGO and humanitarian workers whose projects span southern Zimbabwe and South Africa.
