Cairo International is the second-busiest airport in Africa after OR Tambo, and EgyptAir's presence makes it the hub through which most North Africa-South Africa traffic flows. The 10h 45m journey from Cairo to Johannesburg is served by EgyptAir on the direct route, and by Emirates via Dubai, Qatar Airways via Doha, Turkish Airlines via Istanbul, and Ethiopian via Addis Ababa as alternatives. The Cairo-Johannesburg corridor carries Egyptian businesspeople, South African tourists returning from Nile-cruise and Pyramids trips, and a consistent flow of transit passengers using Cairo as a connection point between sub-Saharan Africa and the wider Mediterranean region. EgyptAir occupies Terminal 2 at Cairo International, a large and complex facility 15km northeast of the city in the Heliopolis district.
November is the cheapest month for this corridor; July through August and December are the most expensive windows, when Egyptian tourism demand peaks with the European summer and South African school holidays simultaneously raise JNB-side pricing. The Giza Pyramids are 25km from the airport on the opposite side of the city, and the drive through central Cairo in peak traffic can add a full hour beyond what appears a simple ground transfer -- a point worth building into any day-of-arrival sightseeing plan rather than discovering in the taxi. For South African passport holders visiting Egypt, a visa on arrival is available at the standard tourist counter for around USD 25 and is generally processed quickly at Cairo International. Egyptian passport holders visiting South Africa do not require a visa for stays of up to 90 days. The OR Tambo arrival end handles Cairo flights at the international terminal on the airport's eastern side, with Gautrain connections running directly into Sandton and the Johannesburg CBD.
