Nampula is a long way from Cape Town by any route. The eighteen-hour-thirty-five-minute figure in the data is not a misprint — it reflects a connection that almost certainly passes through Johannesburg or Nairobi before a domestic LAM Mozambique sector to Nampula itself. There is no Cape Town to Nampula direct service, and the most reliable routing is Airlink or SAA to OR Tambo, then a LAM connection onward. Kenya Airways via Nairobi is an alternative that adds an East African transit. Nampula Airport serves northern Mozambique's provincial capital and is the practical air entry to Mozambique Island, the narrow UNESCO-listed strip of Portuguese-era coral architecture that was the first capital of Portuguese East Africa. The island itself, reached by a 26km causeway from the mainland, draws heritage tourists and a slowly growing pool of South African visitors.

The traffic on this corridor is thin and almost entirely specialist: academics, conservationists, NGO workers, and the small number of South African heritage travellers who have specifically sought out Ilha de Mocambique rather than the better-known Mozambican destinations of Vilankulos or Tofo. Mozambique requires no visa for South African passport holders for stays up to 30 days. February is the cheapest month; June through August is when fares harden, partly driven by dry-season timing across the southern African region. The honest planning advice is to treat this as two separate itineraries booked in sequence — Cape Town to Johannesburg, and then the Mozambique-internal routing — rather than expecting a single aggregator to price the full journey efficiently. Nampula Airport itself is a modest facility handling low passenger volumes; the city is the main commercial hub of northern Mozambique and the gateway to Mozambique Island's dhow harbour, the fort of São Sebastião, and the coral-limestone architecture along the seafront avenue.
