Guarulhos International is twenty-five kilometres northeast of Sao Paulo and Brazil's largest airport by passenger volume. The city of Sao Paulo itself is enormous - a twenty-million-person metropolis that takes time to navigate - but most South African visitors use it as a connection point rather than the primary destination: onward to Rio de Janeiro, the Amazon basin, Iguazu Falls, or Patagonia. Brazilian entry for South African passport holders has been visa-free since 2010, a reciprocal arrangement that makes the immigration step at Guarulhos relatively painless compared to many long-haul destinations.

November tends to be cheapest for this route; July and August are peak, driven by South African school holiday demand coinciding with Brazilian shoulder-season travel. The practical planning point is the SAA JNB-GRU sector - it operates only a few times weekly, so flight date flexibility matters more than on higher-frequency routes.
