For the Kgalagadi in particular, Upington is essential -- the park entrance at Twee Rivieren is a 250km drive south from the airport, manageable in a day if you leave immediately after landing. May is the cheapest month; December and January are the peak summer window when the Northern Cape heat is extreme but school-holiday demand fills seats regardless.

Cape Town International to Upington Airport is a clean, low-stress sector. Upington's terminal is compact with minimal queue time, and the town centre is a fifteen-minute drive from the apron. Rental cars are available at the airport but in limited number -- for a Kgalagadi trip specifically, book the 4x4 rental at the same time as the flight because the park's roads require high-clearance vehicles and availability out of Upington is finite, especially over Easter and the June-July school holidays.
