Book Durban to George Flights

The Durban-George flight connects two very different South African coasts in about two hours - the warm subtropical Indian Ocean shoreline at King Shaka and the cooler, drama-heavy southern edge at George's Garden Route end. FlySafair, Airlink, CemAir and South African Airways share the route, making it one of the more competitively priced domestic connections outside the Johannesburg trunk. The overwhelming majority of passengers are heading into the Garden Route circuit — the slow road through Wilderness, Knysna, Plettenberg Bay and Tsitsikamma, or the golf courses clustered around Fancourt. George Airport sits 10km west of the town with direct road access south toward the coast and east toward the Outeniqua Pass; there is no rideshare or bus service from the terminal, so a rental car is almost mandatory. Book the vehicle at the same time as the flight - the on-airport fleet is small and sells out during December and Easter peaks.

The route's seasonality tracks the Garden Route leisure calendar rather than the standard South African domestic pattern. December through early January is the heaviest period, when Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal families fill the southern coastal towns simultaneously. The April long weekend and the June-July school break create secondary peaks. May is the cheapest month - the Garden Route is visibly quieter after autumn rains and fare competition between the four carriers keeps prices soft. Booking three to six weeks ahead for the December and Easter peaks is wise; for May through October, two weeks of lead time is generally sufficient.

King Shaka International at the Durban end catches first-time users by surprise since the airport is 35km north of central Durban at La Mercy, which means outbound travellers from the Berea or South Beach areas should allow a full hour for the airport transfer in normal traffic, and longer on a Friday afternoon when the N2 corridor backs up ahead of the weekend.
