Zanzibar has become one of the most in-demand short-break destinations for South African leisure travellers, and the Durban end of this corridor has grown with it. There is no scheduled nonstop between King Shaka and Abeid Amani Karume International -- the standard connection routes through Johannesburg and then northeast to Zanzibar's main island Unguja, with Airlink the most consistent carrier on the South African side. Ethiopian via Addis Ababa and Kenya Airways via Nairobi are the alternatives, though both add meaningful hours to the total travel time. The nine-hour-forty-minute journey figure accounts for the JNB transit.
Zanzibar's airport sits 6km south of Stone Town and handles mostly scheduled airlines and a small volume of charter traffic. The island is overwhelmingly a leisure destination -- Stone Town's UNESCO-listed Swahili architecture, the north and east coast beach strips at Nungwi, Kendwa and Paje, and the Indian Ocean diving draw both South African honeymooners and European winter-break visitors in roughly equal numbers. Tanzania requires an eVisa for South African passport holders (apply via the Tanzania Immigration portal, approximately USD 50 single entry) -- the visa-on-arrival option at Zanzibar Airport is available but queues can be slow when multiple flights land simultaneously.
February is the cheapest month for the Durban-Zanzibar corridor; June through August is the expensive window, driven by European dry-season demand coinciding with South African school holidays. Zanzibar's short rains run October to December and its long rains March to May -- the European summer aligns perfectly with Zanzibar's dry season, which is why June-August is both the best time to visit and the most expensive window. For South Africans, a ten-day Zanzibar trip is usually booked as a package with transfers and accommodation included, which makes the flight the anchoring purchase that everything else arranges itself around.
