Airlink operates the only commercial service, running a weekly Saturday departure from Johannesburg via Walvis Bay in Namibia - which means Durban travellers connect through OR Tambo before the St Helena sector. The eighteen-hour-ten-minute total duration reflects the routing reality: this is not a simple hop but a carefully sequenced journey to a British Overseas Territory 1,900 kilometres west of Angola in the middle of the South Atlantic.

Saint Helena has a resident population of around four thousand, a UNESCO-comparable heritage landscape, and Jonathan the tortoise - estimated at over 190 years old and believed to be the world's oldest living land animal. Napoleon's exile and death on the island is the main historical draw; the Longwood House where he spent his final years is maintained by the French government. The airport was constructed on a plateau above the town of Jamestown, which sits in a narrow valley accessed by Jacob's Ladder - 699 steps of near-vertical ascent from the seafront. The descent into the valley from the airport plateau is itself one of the island's strangest practical experiences.

Capacity on this route is severely limited by the weekly schedule and the small aircraft size used on the final sector. November is the cheapest month in the data; peak pricing is July and August when the island's dry-season weather is most reliable. Given the weekly frequency, flight date changes are difficult once booked - treat this as a fixed-date itinerary from the moment of purchase. The island has no ATMs that reliably accept foreign cards, so carry sufficient sterling for the stay; Saint Helena uses pound sterling as its currency and has a higher cost of living than most comparable-population African islands.
