Nampula is northern Mozambique's provincial capital and the main gateway for Mozambique Island - the Ilha de Mocambique - a UNESCO World Heritage Site that was once the first Portuguese colonial capital in East Africa. The connection from OR Tambo is not straightforward: LAM Mozambique operates the key internal Mozambique routes, but the JNB-Nampula itinerary typically routes via Maputo, making the total travel time in the data (ten hours fifteen minutes) a best-case scenario rather than a reliable average. Kenya Airways is also listed as a route option, involving its own hub connection through Nairobi.
Nampula Airport is a small regional facility handling low passenger volumes. The drive from Nampula town to Mozambique Island is about two and a half hours on a road that has improved markedly in recent years but still requires attention after rain. The island itself - a narrow sliver of historic coral buildings, Portuguese fortifications, dhow harbours and Indian Ocean light - rewards the effort of getting there. South African passport holders enter Mozambique visa-free, though entry conditions should be confirmed before travel as requirements have evolved.
The traffic on this corridor is thin: heritage tourism, NGO workers, researchers and a small number of Mozambican businesspeople making the Maputo connection. There are no direct flights from South Africa to Nampula, which is worth stating plainly - any itinerary requires at least one intermediate stop. Travellers with time flexibility often find that flying Johannesburg-Maputo and then taking a domestic LAM sector to Nampula gives the most reliable schedule, even if total elapsed time is longer. February is the off-peak window; June through August brings the most demand. LAM's onward connections within Mozambique also include Pemba and Tete for travellers continuing further north.
