Ndola is the commercial centre of Zambia's Copperbelt and sits close to the DRC border. The new Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe International terminal opened in 2021, replacing a colonial-era facility that had served the copper industry since the Rhodesian period. Airlink operates direct flights from Johannesburg in around two hours twenty minutes, serving a route that is almost entirely business and mining traffic: copper traders, logistics executives, and contractors working between the Copperbelt operations and Gauteng suppliers.
The Copperbelt's economy moves with the price of copper on global markets, and when prices are high the route fills quickly with business travellers booking on short lead times -- which means that cheap last-minute fares are rarer here than on leisure-heavy domestic routes. Airlink's Ndola service connects to OR Tambo rather than to a secondary Johannesburg airport, which is useful for travellers who need onward domestic connections into the South African network. From Ndola it is also possible to drive into Kafue National Park, one of Africa's largest protected areas by surface area, though the journey from Ndola to the park's northern sector takes several hours.
Zambia does not require a visa for South African passport holders for stays up to 90 days. February is the cheapest month in the route data; June-August is the peak window when mining-sector travel overlaps with the dry season and the Copperbelt workforce rotations intensify. Ethiopian and Kenya Airways are the main alternatives to Airlink on this route, routing via Addis Ababa and Nairobi respectively, though connection times can add three or four hours to the overall journey compared to the Airlink direct.
