King Mswati III International Airport at Sikhuphe is one of the more unusual facilities in southern Africa - a full-scale international terminal built on an elevated plateau in eastern Eswatini, with a runway long enough for wide-body jets, yet handling fewer scheduled flights than most small domestic South African airstrips. Airlink is the only carrier running regular scheduled service on the Manzini-Cape Town corridor, routing via OR Tambo rather than flying direct. The 5h 25m journey time includes the Johannesburg connection; the actual Eswatini-to-JNB sector runs about 40 minutes, making it one of the shortest international hops in the region.
The Cape Town connection from Manzini serves a narrow but consistent travel market — Eswatini professionals attending Western Cape meetings, South Africans returning from the Hlane Royal National Park game circuit and the Ezulwini Valley craft markets, and a small flow of diplomatic and development-sector visitors. Eswatini is the last absolute monarchy in Africa, and the kingdom's international air traffic is managed almost entirely through OR Tambo rather than through any direct regional route. November is the cheapest month; July through August and December see higher fares as the South African school holiday pricing pattern flows through to even this thin regional lane. The airport's 70km distance from the Manzini city centre makes outbound travel an early-start exercise regardless of departure time.
Cape Town International at the arrival end is 20km east of the CBD, with the MyCiTi bus and rideshare networks covering the final transfer. For travellers heading to the Garden Route rather than staying in the city, a rental car from the airport is the practical choice - the N2 east toward George passes through the Winelands and Elgin valley, which makes the post-flight drive a genuine part of the experience rather than merely a transfer.
