Port Elizabeth to Maputo is a route that connects two Indian Ocean coastal cities roughly 1,700km apart, but the practical connection goes through Johannesburg rather than along the coast. SAA, Airlink and LAM Mozambique all appear in the data; CemAir should be read as domestic feed into the JNB connection rather than a Port Elizabeth-Maputo carrier of its own. The 5h 50m journey reflects a reasonable OR Tambo transit. Chief Dawid Stuurman International is the departure airport — unusually close to the Gqeberha CBD at just 3km — and Maputo International is the arrival, 3km from the Mozambican capital's city centre on the Indian Ocean bay front. The route carries Eastern Cape businesspeople with Mozambique trade links, Mozambicans transiting through the Eastern Cape, and a small leisure pool attracted by Maputo's distinct Lusophone character.
South African passport holders do not need a visa for Mozambique. Maputo International was substantially upgraded in 2010 with a new Chinese-built terminal, and the drive from the airport into the city along Avenida Julius Nyerere takes under fifteen minutes. February is the cheapest month; June through August is the most expensive window, when dry-season conditions lift regional demand. Maputo rewards visitors who treat it as a destination rather than a transit — the seafood restaurants along the waterfront, the Portuguese-era architecture on the Baixa, the street art in the city centre, and the dhow harbour at the bay front are all within walking distance of the main hotels in the baixa district. For PLZ-based travellers, the planning question is the OR Tambo connection window — at least two hours to absorb any inbound delays from the domestic Eastern Cape leg before the Mozambique international sector begins boarding.
