Book Port Elizabeth to Pietermaritzburg Flights

Port Elizabeth to Pietermaritzburg is a niche domestic route between two Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal secondary cities, with Airlink holding the only scheduled capacity. Five listed daily options in the route data suggests aggregated combinations rather than a single direct schedule — the more likely routing is PLZ-JNB-PZB or PLZ-DUR-PZB, since Pietermaritzburg Airport (Oribi) receives very limited direct service even from Durban. The five-hour listed travel time reflects the connection reality.

Pietermaritzburg Airport sits 5km south of the city and is a small general aviation facility. The city itself is the KwaZulu-Natal provincial legislative capital and is best known as Gandhi's 1893 turning point — the place where he was thrown off a train in a famous early encounter with South African segregation law. The airport handles CemAir and limited Airlink traffic; it is not on the main domestic trunk and serves primarily provincial government and business travellers rather than leisure demand. May is the cheapest booking month; December and January are the most expensive.

For the practical traveller, the question is whether flying PE-PMB makes more sense than driving the 950km along the N2 or connecting via Durban and renting a car for the 80km inland leg. The airport at Pietermaritzburg is small enough that rental availability can be tight — pre-booking is essential. Anyone travelling for the Dusi Canoe Marathon, the Comrades Marathon finish, or legislative business in the provincial capital will find the air connection saves a meaningful day compared to road travel.
