Book Port Elizabeth to Upington Flights

Port Elizabeth to Upington puts two very different South African landscapes in conversation: the lush Eastern Cape coast and the arid Northern Cape Kalahari. The 4h 50m journey routes through Johannesburg in most Airlink configurations -- there is no direct PLZ-UTN service. Upington Airport itself carries a notable footnote: it has one of the longest runways in the Southern Hemisphere, built originally as an emergency strip capable of handling heavy military transport aircraft during the Cold War. Airlink now runs scheduled services into this strip for a very different purpose -- tourism and agricultural business access to a remote Northern Cape town on the Orange River.

Upington is the staging point for Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, the vast reserve straddling South Africa and Botswana that offers some of the continent's best dry-season predator viewing -- black-maned Kalahari lions, cheetah, leopard and brown hyena against a landscape of red sand dunes and ancient riverbeds. The Augrabies Falls on the Orange River, where the river drops sixty metres into a narrow granite gorge, and the Namaqua flower route in spring (August to October) are secondary draws worth planning around. May is the cheapest month for this route; December and January see the highest prices. For travellers whose trip originates in Port Elizabeth or the Eastern Cape Garden Route area, this connection only makes practical sense as part of a longer Kalahari self-drive itinerary -- the four-hour road from Upington into the Kgalagadi and then out through the Botswana border crossing at Twee Rivieren is one of South Africa's great overlanding circuits, and the flight to Upington is simply the fastest way to position for it.
